Govangé, Supreme Wine Blends –  By Unique Eunice Wines: Idioms are fun! When you use them, people think you’re wise. The idiom that tickles our fancy is “Every mistake is a brand new style!” It has stuck with us - probably because it is a soft cushion to fall back on when things go awry, or as some might say, “When fortune laughs at you”.

Conversely, when fortune winks at you, a mistake you make today can turn into a delectable experience tomorrow. This is the Govangé Wines story.

Picture the Caribbean - a simple house by the beach with luscious exotic fruit trees swaying in the tropical breeze. It’s in Retreat, Jamaica, home of Headley (a musician and Metrologist) and Sylvia (poet, teacher and translator). After ten years of hard work in Los Angeles, the couple returned home in 1992 with their savings and big ideas about setting up a school and an entertainment center in their community. Man, this idea was so large that no sooner were posters distributed than neighbors jumped on the bandwagon. Schools mushroomed everywhere like there was no tomorrow! Soon there were too many schools, and not enough students to fill the classrooms. Voila, so is life!

So to the drawing board, the couple went; and another boss idea emerged. New signs went up: Electronics Training and Repair Center. Yup, you guessed right! People grabbed that concept too, and ran with it. “By hook or by crook!” said Sylvia to Headley, “We are sticking it out!” For sure, they held on….. for six lean years. But bills piled up, as customers dwindled. Subsequently, even that super brainwave had to be scrapped - together with a mountain of TVs, radios, and CD players that customers never picked up. Consequently one day, having given away and/or dumped much of their inventory, the couple returned to the house feeling sweaty and somewhat dejected.

Thirsty, Headley opened the refrigerator. He wanted some of Sylvia’s fresh garden fruit juice she always made for family and friends. Tough luck, no juice in sight! So he reached for an old bottle of mango juice he’d left in there probably two years before. He opened it. A gaseous fizz attacked his nostrils as a heavenly aroma assailed him. Pouring out a glass, he cautiously tasted it. Suddenly, a human howl burst from the kitchen. This alarm brought his family running to assist him. Silently, he passed the glass around. It was wine: incredibly delicious, gloriously smooth alcohol. Everybody begged for more. Bingo! Another brilliant business venture was about to be launched. They were going to use Sylvia’s fruit juice creations as a base for their wine making experiments.

No way, José! They may be foolish, but they’re not stupid! This time everything was done on the hush, hush! They worked long hours - in pouring rain, in the scorching sun, no matter. Oh, how they picked, and washed, and peeled, and chopped, and squeezed organic fruits and herbs! They made guava, mango, guinep, and cherry plum wine. They experimented with different blends, read books on viticulture, and compared grape wine-making with their own findings. They were avidly learning this wonderful art. Within five years, they had recorded their personal discoveries on the art of creating organic tannins, acids, herbal extracts and spices; on quality control, and most importantly, how best to make limited batches of excellent, exotic wines, without the use of chemical additives. Well, with all the health benefits derived from our fruits, no need to go figure what the vox populus is on the wines, is there?

By the way, in Retreat today word is now circulating about Govangé. The thing is product promotions took place outside community boundaries. A proper head start, wouldn’t you say? Which brings to mind another delightful idiom: “Who laughs last, laughs best!” Well, with orders rolling in now, Unique Eunice Wines is ha-ha! ha! …..all the way to the bank, hey?
